OUGD202 Evaluation

The module has largely been about learning to get to grips with new software and a way of working that I am not hugely familiar with. Before this module the only experience of moving image and animation was limited and was centred around stop motion. Unlike other projects before using new software I had no knowledge of how to use the software, in comparison to previous briefs this meant that I had to take into account the limitation of my skills when making design decisions. I have gained some new skills in the software After effects, although they have come from nothing, there is still more that I feel I could learn. I feel that I didn't push the boundaries of what I could do within the time frame set for this brief, there are many aspects (cameras,3d perspective, various tools) that I only touched on which I could have looked into more detail, in affect potentially improving the resolutions.

In this module I felt that I was revisiting many of the key fundamentals of how to generate ideas and develop them in a systematic approach. I found that storyboard and similar methods were very useful when it came to transferring my ideas from paper to the computer. Also emphasising on the target audience, tone of voice and specific channel early on in the project allowed me to make quick and easy decisions and move on where as in the previous model I spent to much time on decided this which in affect lead to me falling behind.

Looking at this module I feel that I have made a lot of progress, from the silent movie brief to the final resolutions of the Top 10 brief, I have been able to capitalise on new skills and techniques learnt over the module and applied them to my work. The whole process of storyboarding and techniques such as screen grabs, that lead up to transferring the assets from this to being animated was what I considered to be my favourite part of the project. I found that once I got working on Indesign and what I had specified to do on my storyboards the process of putting the videos together was relatively simple.

From this whole module it has given me a clearer insight into what is required when designing for screen. In the future I can now use what knowledge I have in this area of design to consider that format, to increase or branch out in the range of products and how it can be used to promote and persuade and audience. This is increasingly important in this day and age, with the every growing digital society.

A fundamental part in my work needs that addressed, the organisation and structure of my blog, this became apparent in the progress tutorial, where it was hard to pinpoint the my design direction. Organising the blog more clearly will help others identity the process of how I work, execution and delivery. In the next module my aim alongside the module briefs is to present my work in a easier digestible, chronological order.

Throughout the module there have been a number of crits that I have been required to leave my work for pairs and groups of people to look at, the use of design boards, similar to the blog a clearer understanding of the direction I am going in. They are basically a very useful tool that I need to use more to act like if was there to explain what I was doing.

Another thing that I gained from the module and the top ten brief especially, is that identifying the target audience, channel and basic content helped speed up my design processes. This is applicable within other formats as I spend too much of my time not making decisions and then end up falling behind and rushing to finish a project. Within this brief I was able to identify the direction in which I was heading which allowed me to keep on top of my work.

Sequence test with potential end

Getting there with the video, not quite finished. Also looking through renders such as this one I can spot some errors that need ironing out. Throughout the sequence in the various scenes not all the assets are continually rasterised so some of the images come out pixelated when scaling up. The timing needs a little tweaking to fit with the sound and so that each piece of footage flows well into one another.I have also changed the text in the top left hand corner, so that there is a clear signifier that the footage has changed.

End screen for title sequence

Similare to the start of the title sequence the video will end in a similar way. This video is a quick test, the sound that is going to be included is similar to at the start of the video, the series of beeps. At the end of the video it will cut to the title of what my top ten is.

Error Message for title sequence

For the end of the title sequence the file footage corrupts, these were some possible solutions for the idea of an error occurring and the title sequence coming to an end. I think that the first video is better suited to what I am trying to achieve as the other video seems to over the top.

Omar Little Tests

Revisiting my existing Ident that I had created, I looked to improve it and make it fit in with my other 3 idents. To do this I have changed the text, visuals and audio. The audio is now just the gunshot and Omar whistle and I am using a limited colour palette of just 3 colours at the most on screen at anyone time. The text is in the same typeface, with the visual assets of the characters being silhouettes.

Title Sequence Test with idents

This is a test piece for my title sequence, it combines the idents with the opening log in screen. I am going to include all 4 character idents within the title sequence potentially and experiment with the transitions between each of them. This is the first 28 seconds of the video so far.

I also want to experiment with the ident footage, to try and create it to look like it is cctv footage as it will fit into the idea of someone viewing the files on a computer.

CCTV Clock

Running with the theme of having the idents within my title sequence, I wanted to link in with how the viewer is seeing these pieces of footage through the computer. I have created a counter timer using text frames, which counts up the longer the different idents are playing.

Opening to Title Sequence Tests

This is the initial start to my title sequence. The idea behind it is someone logging onto a computer and searching through the various characters files. This will allow me to use footage from my idents to create the title sequence as they include characters from The Wire.

From this initial video I have expanded on the use of the computer, adding sound to simulate someone typing on a keyboard and the various noises as the computer loads the data.

D'Angelo Ident Tests

Just a couple of tester videos for my final ident for D'Angelo Barksdale. I have tried out two ways to illustrate the 'green' of the audio. The video below is what I had planned to do from my storyboard and below that is an adaptation of what I had planned to create when I was working with the illustrated assets.

Above is my original idea from the story boards, compared to the video below I feel that it isn't as affective when trying to emphasise the 'Green' within the audio.

Re-developing Final Idents

This was going to be one of my final idents but I am going to rework it to incorporating the closing eyelids that are featured in the video below. I also need to add in the title of the top ten in all of the idents. 'Top 10 Characters from The Wire'.

I am going to take elements of both videos and combine them.

I think that compared to my other Ident that this ident portrays the character as well.

Idents ready for Crit

Clay Davis Ident. I just need to tweak it slightly to get everything in sync.

Type Test

An example how I can animate the type in the videos. The idea behind it is the text is being typed on a computer screen.

Packaging Ideas

The idea behind my packaging is to have the disk within a police case file, as The Wire is centred heavily around the Police.

Within the file I want to encase the disk in a bag, similar to the bags the Police use to store the evidence so that it doesn't get contaminated.

More Storyboards

New and revised storyboards. Simplified ready to experiment with my assets in After Effects. Each ident will include a character, a phrase or audio from the tv series relating to that character and imagery that can be associated with that character. The idents in order of how they appear are; Sergei Malatov, Omar Little, Clay Davis and D' Angelo Barksdale.

Change of Direction after Progress Tutorial

After having a progress tutorial, I have taken on board what was said and went about modifying my existing work by simplifying what I had.

More ident ideas

Just a couple more ideas for the other two idents. I am going to keep with my current theme of including voice overs/audio from the TV series. I think that this and the style of illustrations and animation will help the audience recognise the set of idents.
