Supplement newspaper advert

Looking at the various sizes of the adverts within The Guardian newspaper. This will give me a clear idea of what format to design the in newspaper advert, which could potentially be a poster. The two that I thin are most effective are the full page advert in the bottom picture and the half page advert in the second image. With these scales the photograph of the supplement will be strongest.

Supplement spread development

After printing out the various different variations and having a look at each one individually I have picked apart what I need to change and apply to the rest of my spreads.
03 Initial Full Layout

I thought I would staple the spreads together to give a more realistic idea of the sizing and feel. There are some issues that I need to address with the designs and page order. First of all, the images need to be dropped into the right places where there are blank pages. Also to keep the design consistent I am going to change how the photographs are going to be laid out, sacrificing smaller images in a variety of different layouts to larger photos keeping with the area that I have given myself.

This is the centre spread, I plan to change the order so that there is a spread with more imagery on. I have tried to lay the supplement out so that there is a body of text on every other spread so that there is a break when the reader goes through the supplement.

Colour paper covers

I tried printing the covers out on coloured papers each a similar colour to the regions flag. Overall the type is readable on each cover but I thought that the colour of the paper was to vibrant and over powering.

Supplement spread ideas

Just some initial layouts with the largest body of text for the content I wanted to see what I could come up with using it. To keep in line with the rest of the designs again I wanted to keep the the layout quite stripped back playing with both 1 and 2 columns of text with the images coherent to the text or each other in an image spread. The spreads that I am going to develop further are the single column spreads with the chapter heading/page title. I think that page numbers, page titles need to be a definite factor when designing and how well the text reads and sits on the page. I am going to apply the rule of keeping everything with the columns width of text and see how it looks throughout the rest of the spreads.

Finalising supplement covers

I am going with a simple cover, having narrowed it down to a couple of designs I liked I thought this was the best to reflect the nature of what I want the content to be like inside. The idea behind this was that each cover has all 5 languages on it with that days issue highlighted. The colours reflect the flag of the specific language. As I wanted the cover to be quite minimal I am going for more pastel colours and test out how the colours come out on various different stocks.

I have also decided to revert to the cover being just b5 this will allow easier and quicker printing and I thought that the extra panel was pretty much wasted and ineffective. I have included a set of none colour covers so that I can print onto coloured stock as well.Complete Final Cover

Supplement covers development

Front Covers Front Cover

Supplement inside cover

Some variations of the basque flag and then in a different direction exploring a more type driven aesthetic which isn't as effective. I want to keep the colours in the same colour palette as the front cover which runs throughout the whole supplement over the range, so each supplement has that flags specific colour palette Inside Cover Ideas 02 Inside Cover Ideas

Some ideas for the cd sleeve and cd that would come with the language supplements.

Just some initial ideas for the cover of the supplement, keeping the design minimal but applicable for a range of different languages.  The colours relate to the flag of the language that will be printed on the inside of the cover.

Way-finding in context

Content for event program.

Content for event program.

The program is going to include various informations:

Title
Event timetable
List of speakers
List of classes
Class summary
Map/ way-finding

Again I want to keep the layout minimal so that the reader isn't overwhelmed with the amount of information.

Wayfinding and signage

These ideas sprouted from the poster experimentations. What needs to be considered for the signage is that the symbols and text need to be readable from a distance as the whole point of them is to direct people to where they want to go and without clear and concise signage people will get lost.

Supplement mockup

Initial mock up for the supplement without the front and back cover. Working out if the type and layout work and make the text easy to read.

Supplement spread ideas

The supplement is designed to give the reader a brief overview of the specific language to the issue, issue one being Basque. I am keeping the layout simple sticking with 1 medium width column on each page as not to clutter the pages and bog the reader down with an overload of text. Each section has a double page spread which will make references to the information on the information graphics.
The first set of experiments were produced on A5 which was a mistake on my part as I wasn't paying attention to the document set up at the start, realising this I transferred some of the ideas over to the next document which is the correct format.

Postcards

Basically mini posters that can be dropped in shops, galleries libraries. They include the same designs as the posters with information about the event on the reverse side. The colours at the moment are just black and white but when the rest of the set have been finished the idea was to try out various colour palettes, one of the ideas was to try out a gradient.
