Reflection on adopt a word post tutorial

After having my tutorial with Lorenzo it was point out that the project was lacking concept, looking back this is true. I think that I was at a point were I didn't have a strong enough concept and I was just designing something to put onto something. I had a complete rethink and brainstorm session about what I wanted from this project and how I can apply this to my design practice.

I started by making lists of various themes that I could have for the merchandise range for Wordiverse, this started to soon change into coming up with a completely new concept.

This was to make people aware and stop languages become extinct all over the world. Moving away from the idea of adopting a word and just making people aware that there are languages out there that are dying out.

The idea was to bring people together in the form of an event/classes that would raise awareness for these 473 languages and get people interested in them if not trying to learn and speak them. With this would come all the deliverables from the various promotional material and merchandise for the event.

As I wanted to get the concept nailed I had a mini crit with Ben and Aaron to see if my concept and ideas were up to scratch. The issued raised within the discussion helped hugely and allowed me to refine the ideas further.

Issues raised and addressing them:

Rather than raising awareness for all the languages or a set of 5 just choose 1 and focus on the following with it:

• Has a good background/history
• Something that interests you
• Looks good (interesting characters/words)

Part 1:

Look to produce a zine/publication/supplement that could go in something like the guardian to raise awareness for the chosen language which then you could propose to for other languages.

Part 2 (extension):Classes/talks about the chosen language- Promo material and brochure.


*New concept*:


Make people aware of dying languages, in particular choose one language that interests you and inform people about it.


From here what am I going to do?

• Choose 1 dying language and focus on it.
• Expand after I have thoroughly investigated this language.
